Melinda Lopez, Dartmouth ’86, is a playwright, actress and educator. She is the inaugural Mellon playwright-in-residence at the Huntington Theatre Company. Melinda’s one woman show, Mala, available on Audible, won the 2016 Elliott Norton Award for Best New Play and was performed at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis and the Huntington Theatre in Boston. Her play, Sonia Flew, won an Elliot Norton Award and an IRNE Award, and has been produced all over the United States. Two of her plays, Becoming Cuba and Sonia Flew, are available in Spanish translation and were presented at the 2018 National Theatre Festival in Camaguey, Cuba. Melinda is currently working on a translation of Lorca’sYerma that will premiere at the Huntington Theatre in May, 2019. She is also developing Mariel, a modern day immigration drama set in 2018 and 1980 against the backdrop of the Mariel Boatlift. On April 13, Mr. Parent, written by Melinda Lopez and Maurice E. Parent, will be presented as part of the Huntington Theatre Company’s 2019 Breaking Ground festival.
